High functioning anxiety is not a medical diagnosis criteria, but it is now occurring with increasing frequency. Psychologists now have a clear idea of what "high functioning anxiety" means.

"Generally, when people say they have 'high functioning anxiety,' it's an indication that they may have symptoms of anxiety but have not been diagnosed," said Dr. Sikorski, director of health education and assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

"A lot of people have very high levels of anxiety, close to the diagnostic criteria for anxiety disorders, but they're struggling," said Debra Kissen, Ph.D., co-chair of the public education committee of the American Association for Anxiety and Depression.

High functioning anxiety disorder (HFAD) is more like a group phenomenon, referring to people who live in anxiety but are successful in life and career.

The difference between high functioning anxiety and anxiety

Anxiety is a normal part of life. Healthy anxiety can motivate us to work and study and make important decisions in life.

Everyone has some degree of anxiety, but anxiety is usually situational or temporary. But when anxiety is accompanied by fear or a strong physical reaction, it can develop into anxiety disorder.

"Your daily activities can be affected by these symptoms, such as job performance, school work, and relationships," according to statistics that 19 percent of U.S. adults are affected by the anxiety disorder each year.

There are many types of anxiety disorders, each of which has different symptoms, so It's complicated to identify them. Typical anxiety disorders include: generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and so on.

Patients may have two or more anxiety disorders. For example, people with generalized anxiety disorder may also have panic disorder; People with social anxiety may also have symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

It's easy to identify anxiety disorder, because they show obvious symptoms. While It's difficult to identify high fuctioning anxiety, it's mainly because they look good in life.

In other words, a person with "high functioning anxiety disorder" may have symptoms similar to those of an anxiety disorder, but they won't interfere with her normal life.

Another reason is that anxiety really motivates you. It makes you work and study hard.

Even if your anxiety doesn't affect your ability to work, it can reduce your quality of life.
