Panic Disorder VS Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Panic Disorder VS Generalized Anxiety Disorder

In reality, the recognition and treatment rate of anxiety disorders are not ideal, with many patients suffering for several years before entering the psychiatric clinic. Therefore, it is necessary for us to raise awareness of anxiety disorders.

Today, we'll take a look at two representative diseases of anxiety disorders in detail: generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder.

Anxiety and fear are common emotions.

Anxiety is the anticipatory response to future threats, which can be manifested as tension, worry, anxiety, etc. For example, I feel very nervous about the exam in a few days.

Fear is a response to an imminent threat, a more intense anxiety. For example, being frightened by an oncoming truck and Shouting.

Moderate anxiety and fear have positive effects that can stimulate people's internal motivation to make better preparations to improve the situation or avoid danger. For example, fear of COVID-19 leads us to better protect ourselves and reduce unnecessary travel, and fear of car accidents leads us to better obey the rules of the road.

But when excessive anxiety or fear, out of proportion to the corresponding stress or threat or even out of the corresponding situation, becomes a persistent emotional state, then it becomes pathological, such as generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder.

Let's focus on their clinical manifestations.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder(GAD)

Generalized anxiety disorder, also known as "chronic anxiety," is characterized at its core by significant/excessive anxiety and is generalized and persistent.

It means that anxiety is often out of the corresponding situation, or the degree is obviously not proportional to the corresponding pressure, threat, is a kind of unnecessary, excessive anxiety. For example, when a mother saw her child break a little skin, she began to worry that her child would suffer from tetanus, which would endanger her life.

Refers to the anxiety is often not limited to a particular situation, usually involves all aspects of daily life, with physical health, safety, financial situation, work and so on the most common, It can be a very small things in life, and sometimes the patient's anxiety is not even a clear object of anxiety or the lack of corresponding external environment (i.e., "free floating").

It means that anxiety is chronic and long-term.Patients will be accompanied by physical reactions, such as restlessness, trembling, headaches, flustered, sweating, dry mouth, gastrointestinal reaction and so on, so in reality a considerable number of patients because of physical symptoms first to general hospital rather than psychiatric, and often after a comprehensive examination also did not find a clear cause of physical discomfort.

Panic Disorder

Panic disorder, also known as "acute anxiety," is a kind of recurrent attacks of acute severe anxiety (panic) ,patients often experience a sudden high level of fear (often peaking within a few minutes) that may be accompanied by physical symptoms (autonomic/plant neurology symptoms) such as palpitations, dyspnea, sweating, dizziness, numbness in the whole body, followed by near-death or fear of death,or feeling like they are going out of control or afraid of going crazy. Some patients may feel that the world suddenly becomes unreal, or that they become unreal.

An episode usually lasts a few minutes or longer, and the feeling of fatigue after the episode may last a day or two.

Because of the severe physical discomfort during the attack, most patients will mistakenly think they are suffering from a physical illness and call emergency services for help. However, after examination, it is often concluded that there is no physical disease.

Generally, the seizure of patients lacks clear triggering factors, and the seizure is not limited to a specific situation, but individual patients may also have a certain triggering situation.

Patients often worry about having another attack, and may avoid some occasions where they have had a panic attack in the past, where they are unable to get medical attention in time, or become dependent to avoid being alone.

Through today's introduction, I believe you have more understanding of generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. But keep in mind that anxiety disorders are not scary and can be actively managed through medication or psychotherapy, even if you are sick.If you or your relatives and friends have the above similar performance, after their own active adjustment is still unable to alleviate, please be sure to seek professional help to the psychological outpatient department in time!
